Homemade Chocolate Magic Shell

Homemade Chocolate Magic Shell | The Suburban Soapbox

You can whip up this nostalgic treat in a flash using two ingredients and your microwave oven.  A rich, chocolatey treat you'll want to put on everything all year-long.   I love to reminisce.  Love it.  A song can come on the radio and immediately blast me back to my teen years....even to a very specific moment.  A smell can remind me of a certain person, a best friend, a bad date, a room in my childhood home.  Food is no different, there are foods that I only had as a child and then … [Read more...]

Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream (and a Scoop Adventures Book Review)

Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream | The Suburban Soapbox

A childhood favorite transformed into....another childhood favorite.  Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream combines two timeless comfort foods into one creamy and decadent treat.  Just in time for summer.  One perk of being a food blogger is that, on occasion, a cookbook will appear on my doorstep.  Those that know me are aware that I enjoy flipping through the pages of a cooking magazine or book while enjoying a glass of wine.  This is my happy place.  Staring at mouthwatering food … [Read more...]

Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream

Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream | The Suburban Soapbox

I have been trying to make this recipe for weeks.  One attempt lead to plain vanilla ice cream because after I started the base I realized the kids had eaten all the marshmallows. The second attempt I went all in and made S'mores Ice Cream.....but I threw away my notes during the move and everyone ate the ice cream before I could snap a few photos.  I left a pint of that for the new owners but when I excitedly showed them the pint in the freezer during the walk-through they didn't seem … [Read more...]

My Favorite Things: Frosty Treats Edition

Jeni's Ice Cream Sandwiches

Since most of the country is in the middle of, yet, another heat wave I thought I would try and help you cool off by sharing some of my favorite things relating to frosty treats. None of the items I am about to share were provided to me by the manufacturer.  All items were researched and purchased by me personally....except the ice cream maker which I received as a gift. (Thank you, Eloise!) We'll start with that....my ice cream maker (which so many of you have asked about) is the Cuisinart … [Read more...]

Bananas Foster Ice Cream

I'm on a frozen treat bender right now.  I've been craving ice cream like a pregnant woman....I'm not, just in case you were wondering.  And, even when I was pregnant, I didn't crave ice cream....ever.  I wanted hot dogs and mexican food, together....with tons of hot sauce.  Yum. :-( This flavor didn't take much time to dream up.  I love Bananas Foster, the classic New Orleans dessert made famous by Brennan's Restaurant in the French Quarter. Everywhere I go they serve it with vanilla ice … [Read more...]

Strawberry and Vanilla Bean Cheesecake Pudding Pops

Strawberry, Vanilla Bean, Cheesecake Pudding Pops

These are not Mr. Cosby's pudding pops. Remember those? I used to sell them on the playground at recess in elementary school. I LOVED them! They were only a quarter and if you put your tongue on the side it would freeze to it. That's probably why they were discontinued, ya think? A playground full of 10 year olds with Jell-o Pudding Pops dangling from their tongues, that has got to be the reason. I had a craving for them recently and I thought about making my homemade chocolate pudding to … [Read more...]

Lavender-Vanilla Ice Cream

Happy Spring, my friends!  I'm relieved to see the winter gone and even though I woke up to a light blanket of snow this morning I know my daffodils will stop being shy...blooming very soon.  I'm waiting.  They already have buds so what's the hold up? In the meantime, I made a very spring-y ice cream for you....thanks to my mother and the movie It's Complicated.  If you haven't seen the movie, Meryl Streep's character makes lavender ice cream which she shares with the ex-husband/current … [Read more...]

Coffee Ice Cream

Coffee Ice Cream, up close and personal

I was never a coffee drinker, at work I would start my day with water or tea while everyone else was crowding around the coffee maker waiting....and waiting....and waiting, not so patiently might I add, for their morning jump-start.  It was like their drug, but I guess for our employer's sake this was not a bad drug to be addicted to. After I had my son, I became one of the addicts.  I would skulk around the office pantry waiting for the "coffee people" to make the good stuff.  Like a drug … [Read more...]
