8 3/4inchslices hearty breadBrioche and Challah work well
1cuphalf and halfor heavy cream
3large eggs
1 1/2tablespoonsmaple syrup
1teaspoonground cinnamon
1/2teaspoonvanilla extract
1/4teaspoonkosher salt
3tablespoonssalted butter
1/2cupCinnamon Sugaroptional
Instructions
Cut the crusts off the bread (optional) and cut into 3/4 inch wide sticks. Set aside.
In a wide shallow bowl, whisk together the half and half, eggs, syrup, cinnamon, vanilla and salt.
Add the cinnamon sugar mixture to a shallow bowl, if using.
Dip each bread sticks into the egg mixture and allow to soak for approximately 15-20 seconds on each side. Transfer to a baking sheet to allow the mixture to soak all the way through the bread.
Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a nonstick griddle pan over medium high heat.
Place 1/2 the bread sticks on the pan and cook until golden brown, approximately 2-3 minutes. Flip and continue to cook on all sides until golden.
If using, immediately place the French toast sticks in the cinnamon sugar and roll to coat all sides.
Transfer to a platter and cover with foil to keep warm.
Repeat with the remaining bread sticks.
Serve immediately with warm maple syrup, marshmallow fruit dip or your favorite jam, if desired.
Notes
French Toast Sticks are best enjoyed soon after cooking but you can freeze them for quick breakfasts later.Freeze the French toast sticks in a single layer on a baking sheet until firm. Transfer the sticks to a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
