Equipment
Tall glass
Espresso machine or strong coffee method
Ingredients
6
ounces
chilled tonic water
2
ounces
freshly pulled espresso
or 2 ounces strongly brewed coffee concentrate
Ice
1
lime wedge
optional
1
teaspoons
simple syrup or honey syrup
optional
Instructions
Fill a tall glass with ice.
Pour the chilled tonic water over the ice.
If using simple syrup or honey syrup, stir it into the tonic water.
Slowly pour the espresso over the back of a spoon or gently down the side of the glass so it floats on top of the tonic.
Garnish with a lime wedge.
Serve as-is for the layered look, or give it one gentle stir before sipping.
Notes
Use a tonic water you enjoy drinking on its own since it’s one of the main flavors in the drink.
Freshly pulled espresso gives the best flavor and the prettiest layered look.
No espresso machine? Use strong coffee concentrate, moka pot coffee, AeroPress coffee or cold brew concentrate.
Pour the espresso slowly to help it float over the tonic.
Serve immediately so the drink stays cold and fizzy.
For a citrus twist, swap the lime for grapefruit, orange or lemon.
For a softer, slightly sweeter drink, add simple syrup, honey syrup or vanilla syrup.
For a creamy variation, add a small splash of half-and-half or oat milk and stir gently.
