There are days when a regular iced coffee just feels a little too heavy, and that’s when I start reaching for the tonic water.

I love a good coffeehouse drink as much as the next person, but I’m also a big fan of making those fun little treats at home without turning my kitchen into a full-blown café. This Espresso Tonic is one of those recipes that feels fancy, looks gorgeous in the glass, and takes about as much effort as pouring bubbles over ice.

I started making Espresso and Tonic as my simple summer afternoon drink because it’s light, fizzy, refreshing and still gives me that much-needed little pep in my step. The espresso brings the bold, roasty flavor, the tonic adds sparkle and a slightly bitter citrusy edge, and a lime wedge pulls the whole thing together like a tiny vacation in a glass.

It’s not creamy. It’s not syrupy. It’s not dessert in a cup. It’s clean, crisp, cool and just sweet enough if you want it to be.

An Espresso Tonic is a sparkling iced coffee drink made by pouring fresh espresso over tonic water and ice. The espresso sits on top for a beautiful layered look before slowly swirling into the tonic.

The flavor is bold, bubbly, slightly bitter, citrusy and super refreshing. Think iced coffee meets spritzy mocktail, but without the alcohol.

Ingredients for Espresso Tonic

You only need a few simple ingredients, so choose ones you really like.

  • Tonic Water – Use a tonic water you enjoy drinking on its own. Regular tonic adds a little more sweetness, light tonic keeps it crisp, and flavored tonic like citrus, grapefruit or elderflower can be fun. You can use club soda or sparkling water in a pinch, but you’ll lose that signature bittersweet tonic flavor.
  • Espresso – Freshly pulled espresso gives the best flavor and that pretty layered look. No espresso machine? Use strong coffee concentrate, moka pot coffee, AeroPress coffee or cold brew concentrate.
  • Ice – A glass packed with ice keeps the drink cold, fizzy and refreshing. Large cubes are great if you want it to melt more slowly.
  • Lime – A squeeze of lime brightens everything up. Orange peel, grapefruit, lemon or a few dashes of orange bitters are great swaps.
  • Sweetener – Tonic is already lightly sweet, but a little simple syrup can soften the bitter edge. Honey syrup, vanilla syrup, brown sugar syrup or maple syrup all work, just keep it light.

How to Make an Espresso Tonic

This is one of those drinks that’s more about the pour than the prep.

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice. Don’t be shy. A glass packed with ice keeps everything cold and helps the drink stay fizzy.
  2. Pour in the tonic water. Add it slowly so the bubbles don’t foam up too much. You want it cold, crisp and sparkling.
  3. Add sweetener if you’re using it. A little simple syrup will soften the bitter edge. Give it a gentle stir before adding the coffee.
  4. Pour the espresso slowly. For that pretty layered look, pour the espresso over the back of a spoon or gently down the side of the glass. The dark espresso should float over the bubbly tonic before it slowly starts to swirl.
  5. Finish with lime. Squeeze it in, drop it on top or serve it on the rim. The citrus makes the whole glass taste brighter.
  6. Sip it layered or stir it once. I love serving it layered because it’s so pretty, then giving it one gentle stir before drinking.

How To Store An Espresso Tonic

  • Espresso Tonic is best made fresh and served right away. The bubbles are the whole point, and once the tonic sits with the espresso and ice, it will start to flatten and dilute.
  • If you want to prep ahead, you can chill the tonic water, make your simple syrup and brew the espresso in advance. Store the espresso in the refrigerator until ready to use, then assemble the drink just before serving.
  • Once mixed, I don’t recommend storing it. It’ll still be drinkable for a little while, but it won’t have that same crisp, fizzy, coffeehouse magic.

KELLIE’S TIPS FOR THE BEST ESPRESSO TONIC

  • Chill everything first. Cold tonic, cold glass and plenty of ice make a big difference.
  • Use good tonic water. If you don’t like the tonic on its own, you won’t love it with espresso.
  • Pour slowly. This keeps the drink from foaming over and helps create that pretty layered look.
  • Taste before sweetening. Tonic water already has some sweetness, so you may not need extra syrup.
  • Use fresh espresso when you can. The flavor is bolder and the crema helps make the top layer look gorgeous.
  • Don’t over-stir. One gentle stir is enough. Too much stirring knocks out the bubbles.
  • Add citrus. Lime is simple and perfect, but grapefruit and orange are amazing with espresso.
  • Make it your own. Vanilla syrup, orange bitters or a splash of oat milk can completely change the vibe.

Espresso Tonic Flavor Variations

  • Citrus Espresso Tonic -Swap the lime for grapefruit, orange or lemon. Add a strip of citrus peel for extra aroma.
  • Orange Bitters Espresso Tonic – Add a couple dashes of orange bitters before the espresso. It gives the drink a slightly cocktail-ish flavor without making it complicated.
  • Vanilla Espresso Tonic – Add a small splash of vanilla syrup before the tonic. It smooths out the bitter edge and makes the drink taste a little softer.
  • Creamy Espresso Tonic – Add a splash of half-and-half or oat milk after the espresso and stir gently. It turns cloudy and creamy, but still keeps some of that sparkle.
  • Cold Brew Tonic – Use cold brew concentrate instead of espresso for a smoother, less intense version.

Ingredients 

  • 6 ounces chilled tonic water
  • 2 ounces freshly pulled espresso, or 2 ounces strongly brewed coffee concentrate
  • Ice
  • 1 lime wedge, optional
  • 1 teaspoons simple syrup or honey syrup, optional

Instructions 

  • Fill a tall glass with ice.
  • Pour the chilled tonic water over the ice.
  • If using simple syrup or honey syrup, stir it into the tonic water.
