Fun and personalized, these cute cookies tins are easy to make and a great way to use up old, worn tins that are taking up valuable real estate in your storage closet.

Chalkboard Cookie Tins | The Suburban Soapbox

Just call me a pack rat. I don’t like to get rid of anything, especially if it was received as a gift. When we moved last year I did my best to clear out the unused stuff but inevitably, during the purge, my emotions took over. So, I have things that really should have been trashed packed away in boxes in the storage room. Old, dated sweaters, mugs from various cities across the US, a pink tinsel Christmas tree. It’s all there. I will, someday, have yard sale but until that day in the very distant future….I’ll repurpose.

Thankfully, I saved a bunch of cookie tins. Let’s all agree that they can be pretty valuable and much more practical than a pink tinsel Christmas tree. You can gift a lot of different things in a tin or store tiny, itty, bitty toys. But today, we’re decorating and making them fun for the sole purpose of gifting food. Because food is amazing and everyone likes to eat.

All you need is some hideous cookie tins that you don’t really love….try to find some that aren’t dented or rusted, a spray can of chalkboard paint and some chalk markers. Go outside and spray the tins with the paint until covered (make sure you don’t overspray or you’ll have drips all over the place, not a good look.) Allow the paint to dry, it will take about 15 minutes. And then decorate using the markers.

I’m sure there are some of you who are super artistic and will be able to make those beautiful chalk drawings. But I’m not…so there you have it. I can draw like a 5-year-old at best, that is the extent of my artistry. But what I put in that tin….that’s what really matters anyway.

Super fun idea. This would be great for teacher gifts. And something the kids could help with too!

I totally understand the pack rat thing. Although I’m very organized and have everything in its place, I have a horrible time getting rid of stuff. Yes, there might be boxes of my daughter’s childhood toys carefully packed away in the basement. She turned 37 last summer 🙂 And I believe I know exactly where there’s a huge stash of old cookie tins. Sounds like a project to me!
