Feeling festive here and I can’t wait for the weekend!  I finally found some time to wrap gifts…I only have 47,000 more to go and I sipped a little cocktail to ease the pain.  I mean, really, what the heck happens to the body when you’re hunched over on the floor for a half hour?  I felt like I was 95 when I tried to stand up.  It was alarming…I need to get back to the gym. But I was super glad to cross a few more things off the list today because the past few weeks were so busy, it helped kick my procrastination into full gear.

A couple weekends ago, while I was busy procrastinating, Landon and I met my parents down in National Harbor for a weekend stay at the Gaylord National Resort.  They have an amazing holiday display with ice carvings, rides, fun activities for kids and an evening light show where it snows INSIDE the hotel.

It was so much fun to get into the holiday spirit by getting away from the computer and the kitchen for a weekend….and just enjoy my family.

The ice carvings were simply spectacular and are all housed in a building that’s kept at a balmy 9 degrees.

Before entering the building everyone was issued a standard blue parka (they’re required so don’t try to decline the parka…it is NOT an option.) 🙂 . The you walk through room after room of stunning and HUGE ice sculptures that were inspired by Christmas around the world.

The little guys loved it and couldn’t get enough of the ice slide…yes, an ice slide made completely of ice and this thing is fast!  And hard…and cold and you just need to try it once.

The next day, we enjoyed a buffet breakfast with the Peanuts gang before heading home.

It was a great fun filled weekend to kick off the holiday season.  When we got home, Landon and I relaxed on the sofa next to the fire with some Shirley Temple Mocktails in hand….because we didn’t have enough sugar all weekend. HA!

Shirley Temple Mocktails were my favorite drink to order when I went out to dinner with my family when I was little. I felt so grown up and special when the waitress placed one in front of me.  The best part, aside from the neon red color, was the maraschino cherry…with a stem, of course. And it was always skewered on a cocktail pick shaped like a sword.  Who remembers those?

And they couldn’t be simpler to make….just two ingredients, ginger ale and grenadine syrup.  I rimmed the glass with red sanding sugar just to make them a bit more festive and skewered my cherry with a christmas tree cocktail pick. Add some festive straws and you’re good to go.  My son said they taste just like the Shark Attack we made last summer.  They make a great addition to any party and look just like my grown up Pomegranate Bellini.…which, in all honesty, I prefer. Cheers!
