We have, again, been tasked with building a leprechaun trap for school. Last year was our first attempt and while out trap was pretty spectacular (and wildly popular on Pinterest this year) the sneaky little varmint escaped before we could catch a glimpse. So, this year I thought we could lure him into the trap and keep him there with a little snack. Easy, peasy Leprechaun Bait is my strategy to get him to stick around until morning.

Leprechauns like gold…we all know that….and Lucky Charms. But who doesn’t like Lucky Charms, I mean…really. They also like rainbows and lots of green. So, I naturally combined all those things and then topped them with a healthy drizzle of chocolate…because I like chocolate. The chocolate also holds everything together like a bark so you have big chunks of perfection. I used green candy coated chocolates….M&M’s but mine were not M&M brand. You can usually find M&M’s in the bulk candy section of your grocery store when you need only one color. The sprinkles and chocolate I used are Wilton brand…this post is not sponsored by Wilton, this is just what I’ve found to be the best for me. (And most readily available.)

The colors are amazing and the little flecks of gold throughout surely will keep him around until you can see him. Sprinkle some inside and outside your trap to lure him in. Then save the rest for yourself. The combination of slightly salty, very sweet is so addictive you’re not going to want to share. You may not even want to bother leaving some for the Leprechaun. In fact, if you build a good enough trap you can just eat all the bait yourself. And if you need an idea for a trap, you can follow the instructions for this one from last year.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Lucky Charms Cereal
  • 2 cups popped popcorn, lightly salted
  • 1 1/2 cups Green candy coated chocolates, M&M's
  • 1/4 cup rainbow sprinkles or nonpareils, I used Wilton
  • 1/4 cup gold sugar pearls, I used Wilton
  • 8 ounces white chocolate, melted (I used Wilton Candy Melts)
  • 8 ounces green chocolate, melted (I used Wilton Candy Melts)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, toss together the cereal, popcorn and M&M's. Spread the mixture on a baking sheet or countertop lined with parchment paper. Pour the melted white chocolate into a plastic bag with the corner snipped off and drizzle over the mix. Repeat the procedure with the green chocolate using a clean bag and drizzle over the mix.
  • Sprinkle the sprinkles and sugar pearls over the chocolate quickly before it has a chance to cool. Allow the chocolate to set, approximately 15-20 minutes before breaking apart.
