Supremely addictive, don’t say I didn’t warn you….this easy to make Saltine Cracker Toffee is affectionately known as Christmas Crack for a very good reason. Salty crackers drenched in sweet, butter toffee and then covered in chocolate are the ultimate in food gifts for the holiday season.

This is definitely an old favorite of mine. It takes all the will power I have not to eat the entire pan of this easy cracker candy recipe. In fact, as I sit here typing and staring at the crumbled up paper towel from the two I’ve already eaten, I’m struggling not to run up to the kitchen and eat the rest.

I’m so glad I only made one batch but at the same time, this Saltine Cracker Toffee recipe is incredibly easy to make. It comes together so quickly and clean up is a three-minute ordeal….at best.

This is, however, if you choose to use the dishwasher to clean the baking sheet, measuring cup and spatula. If you wash by hand then I can’t help you. You may need to add another 4 minutes to your clean up time. The most grueling part is waiting for them to cool. The longest 20 minutes……EVER.

Saltine Cracker Toffee

I’ve seen this recipe so many times over the years and it’s always, pretty much, the same. Fabulous! Feel free to leave off the nuts or use another type of nut OR top with some festive holiday sprinkles!

Before you make a batch, may I suggest you find a very good hiding place so you can hoard them all to yourself. Just a little suggestion.

What Is Cracker Toffee

This easy cracker toffee is nothing short of magic….it’s toffee candy coated saltine crackers (or you can make ritz cracker toffee if you want!), then covered in chocolate and nuts. Cut into bars, you may or may not become an addict to this Christmas Crack with your very first bite.

How To Make It

This Saltine Cracker Toffee candy recipe (or cookie….is it a cookie or candy? This one is a stumper.) is super simple to make:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper leaving a bit of overhang and line the sheet with saltines.
  3. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and then add the light brown sugar stirring to combine.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling for approximately 3 minutes or until the mixture is deep caramel in color.
  5. Pour the boiling mixture (please be careful!) onto the saltines and spread to cover evenly.
  6. Bake the saltines in a 400 degree oven for 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the saltines.
  8. Let the toffee sit for a few minutes to allow the chocolate to melt and then spread evenly over the toffee using an offset spatula or a butter knife.
  9. Sprinkle the chopped pecans on the chocolate and let cool completely.
  10. Once the toffee has cooled break apart into pieces and store in an airtight container.

Ingredients You Need

You can make your cracker toffee recipe with easy to find ingredients, in fact you only need a total of FIVE ingredients to whip up this addictive snack!

  • Saltine Crackers (you can also use Ritz Crackers or Graham Crackers)
  • butter
  • light brown sugar
  • chocolate chips (We like semi-sweet but feel free to improvise using dark or milk chocolate)
  • pecans, walnuts, sprinkles or other festive topping

Can You Freeze It

Unfortunately, this cracker toffee recipe doesn’t do well when frozen. If you do freeze it, it will be soft and a little mushy when thawed so it’s best to store it in an airtight container which will keep them fresh for about 2 weeks. If you can keep your hands off them that long.

Since they’re so simple to make, this is the one Christmas Cookie I save for last when making my cookie tins for friends and family.
