I’m not much of a commercial Easter candy fan. I don’t really love Peeps that much, they’re super cute but I won’t sit and eat a whole box. They’re not my thing. Chocolate is where it’s at for me and when I say chocolate, I mean the good stuff. The handcrafted rich chocolate you’re not going to get at Target. Except for the Reeses’ Peanut Butter Eggs. Give me a bushel of those puppies and I’ll see you later.

I have my mom to blame I think. She used to spend her time in the weeks leading up to Easter making mountains of candy. Buttercream eggs, peanut butter eggs, coconut cream eggs (my personal fav BTW). Handpainted chocolate ducks and little chocolate bunnies. Chocolate lollipops. And these Milk Chocolate Egg Gift Boxes. And they were always personalized. Always. I looked forward to my egg box every single year. Obviously, the mystery of the Easter Bunny wasn’t such a mystery when I was wise enough to put it all together but it didn’t matter. My Easter basket was the best on the block.

I tried to keep the tradition alive when Katie was little and I succeeded….for one year. It wasn’t until recently that I broke out the mold and gave it a go again. Now I make them as gifts to hide money or small presents. It’s such an impressive way to present a gift to someone you love and the surprise inside is totally up to you. You could even fill it with some Bunny Bait!

These are really simple to make, I have no skills when it comes to any type of artistic pastry decorating so this is a classic example of…if I can do it, so can you. All you need is a half pound egg candy mold that you can purchase on Amazon, a pastry bag with a star tip and a no.2 straight tip, chocolate, confectioners’  sugar, milk, food coloring and a little candy decoration such as a bunny or a flower. The hands on time is just a few minutes. You’ll spend more time waiting for the chocolate to harden in the refrigerator.

The bonus here…for you anyway….the extra chocolate that drips on the edge of the mold, you get to eat that. šŸ™‚

Ingredients

  • 1 12- ounce package milk chocolate, I used Wilton Candy Melts for this recipe
  • 4-6 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon your favorite food coloring
  • Candy for decorating

Instructions

  • In a microwave safe bowl, melt the 1/2 the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second intervals mixing well each time until the chocolate is smooth.
  • Carefully spoon about 2-3 tablespoons into each cavity of the egg mold and tilt around until the entire surface of the egg has a light coating of chocolate. Chill in the refrigerator until hard, approximately 5-10 minutes.
  • Melt the remaining chocolate in the microwave and repeat the procedure to coat the mold with another layer of chocolate. Chill until hardened.
  • While the egg is chilling, mix the sugar and milk in a large bowl using a hand mixer on med speed until smooth. If the icing is too loose, add more sugar. If the icing is too crumbly, add more milk. The icing needs to be stiff so it doesn't slide off the egg. Mix in the food coloring until desired shade is achieved.
  • Using a pastry bag fitted with a straight tip, pipe the name on the top of the egg and add a little dot as the "glue" for your decoration, if using. Change the tip on the pastry bag to a star tip and pipe little stars around the edge of both the top and the bottom of the egg. Allow the icing to harden before packaging or placing in a basket.
  • The egg can be made up to 7 days in advance and stored in a cool, dry place.
