Pork Roll Egg and Cheese Sandwich

Breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day, and this sandwich is at the top of the list for all-time breakfast sandwich recipes! That’s a huge statement coming from me. It’s a simple sandwich recipe that’s got no frills and all flavor. You can always add more flavor as well with a dash of hot sauce or even some ketchup if you’d like, but I like it just the way it is!

Pork roll isn’t the most common cut of meat outside of New Jersey and the surrounding areas. But if you can get your hands on it at your local supermarket, do so! It may also be labeled as “Taylor ham,” but it’s the same thing. Essentially, pork roll is a processed pork meat that’s similar to Canadian bacon. It’s easy to fry up in a skillet and perfect for tossing onto this breakfast sandwich.

You can choose between cheddar or American cheese here. Or, go rogue with whatever cheese you like best! As for the egg, it gets cooked in butter with a little salt and pepper then topped with the cheese so it gets nice and melty. While you can scramble the eggs if you’d like, they’re traditionally left untouched in this classic breakfast sandwich recipe.

How to Make this Pork Roll Egg and Cheese Sandwich

This breakfast sandwich is so easy to toss together with classic ingredients!

  1. Prepare the pork roll. Score each slice of pork roll. You do this simply by making 4 small cuts (about 1 inch in size) around the edge of each slice.
  2. Cook the pork roll. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, then toss the scored pork roll into the pan. Cook the pork roll for about 3 minutes per side or until browned. Transfer the slices to a plate and keep warm while you make the eggs.
  3. Cook the eggs. Melt some butter in the same pan you cooked the pork in. Crack four eggs into the skillet. Break up the yolk, but don’t scramble! Season with a few shakes of salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Cook the eggs just until they’re beginning to set, then reduce the heat to low.
  4. Make them cheesy. Flip the eggs over, then add a slice of cheese to two of the eggs. Cook for just another minute so the eggs are cooked and the cheese has melted.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches. Place the bottom half of the roll on a plate. Then top each roll with two slices of pork roll, an egg without cheese, then the egg with cheese. Repeat, then top with the top half of the kaiser roll and serve right away. Enjoy!

Tips for the Best Pork Roll Egg and Cheese Sandwich

Check out these easy tips and tricks before you make your new favorite breakfast sandwich:

  • Don’t scramble the egg. It’s a little tricky to break the yolk and resist the urge to scramble. However, it makes for the best sandwich when the yolk is just barely broken.
  • Score the pork roll. I think it’s actually a crime (mostly joking) to cook pork roll/taylor ham without first scoring it! While I make four cuts, it’s also common to make as many as six.
  • Any butter works. You can use salted or unsalted, whichever you prefer. Just keep in mind that the pork roll is already fairly salty, so you may not want to go overboard.
