Chai Spice Mix
An aromatic blend of six simple spices is what created this unforgettably good Chai Spice Mix Recipe! It’s the perfect spice to have in your cupboard to help kickstart fall. It can be used to make lattes, desserts, and even on toast! You’re going to LOVE having this homemade chai spice always on hand.
Chai Spice
Homemade spices and seasonings really are the best. Sure, store-bought stuff will work in a pinch, but they never seem to have as much flavor as the homemade recipes do! And that’s true for this easy chai spice mix. It’s an inexpensive blend of just six spices that, when mixed together, create a beautifully aromatic and autumnal experience.
The best part about making seasonings and spices at home, besides how much more delicious they are than store-bought, is that you can customize them as you’d like. For example, sometimes I find myself sprinkling in just a little bit more cinnamon into the mix, just because I really love how it tastes. And it’s the perfect seasoning for my favorite Chai Sugar Cookies!
You can also omit ingredients if they’re not suited for your palate, but I do recommend trying it just as it is before making any big adjustments, because this recipe is so very good. This recipe has truly the best balance of all the ingredients that make chai spice so irresistible.
In addition to being delicious and customizable, this recipe is also better than store-bought stuff because it lacks preservatives and artificial flavors. There are far too many brands that are more artificial junk than real ingredients these days!
How to Make Chai Spice Seasoning
Making a jar of this earthy, warm, delightful spice mix is SO easy.
- Mix. In a small bowl, whisk all the ingredients together until well combined.
- Store. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place.
See?! It’s really that easy. Enjoy!
How To Use Homemade Chai Spice Mix
There are so many ways to utilize your new favorite spice! When you taste this spice, your mind will automatically think of fall, so try to use this spice with all of your favorite fall recipes to make them even more warm and cozy. It gives everything an extra kick of falling leaves, warm sweaters, and all that jazz! Of course, I also just like mine sprinkled on a piece of warm buttered toast, too.
We use it in place of pumpkin spice in our Pumpkin Pie recipe and stir it into this homemade Pumpkin Butter!
Sometimes I’ll even sprinkle a bit in my Chai Latte for a little added spice.
How Long Will Chai Spice Last
In an airtight container in a cool, dark area at room temperature, this spice mix will stay fresh for up to 6 months! That’s another reason I love this spice mix – it stays fresh throughout the entirety of fall, and then some. I also love handing out little jars of this spice mix at the beginning of fall, as it makes the cutest gifts to friends and family! I think that gifting homemade spices and seasonings is even better than handing out baked goods, simply because of the shelf life. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

Why do you show whole star anise in the photos above but ground star anise is not one of the ingredients in your Chai Spice Mix? Star Anise would add another warm spice flavor. What amount of ground star anise would your recommend adding to your recipe?
I would only add about a 1/4 teaspoon of anise if you were to include it. I don’t know why I used star anise in the photo….probably just grabbed it because it’s so beautiful to photograph. Apologies for any confusion!
How much of this do you use in each cup? Do you add it to black tea and cream? Sorry, not a Chai drinker but want to make it for a friend…

So, this is more for flavoring than making the actual tea. I use it for baking or sprinkling in my morning coffee. It’s also great sprinkled on toast with a little sugar.
