Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs
Life isn’t perfect….it’s messy, it’s unpredictable and it’s full of disappointment but if you approach it in a new way you can find solutions to messy, unpredictable and disappointing events. Like the hard boiled egg. Seriously, something so simple can just ruin your day because we all know that boiling a hard boiled egg is like a science experiment at best.
I LOVE having hard boiled eggs around as a quick, healthy snack but the problem lies in the peeling. And never knowing if they’re actually going to cooperate. It shouldn’t be that difficult to make perfect hard boiled eggs but it always provides a crazy challenge for me….and one that I’m determined to conquer.
After several hard boiled egg disasters, I finally found the key to making perfect, easy peel hard boiled eggs….in the magical Instant Pot or pressure cooker! Who knew that my least favorite kitchen appliance would be my hard and soft boiled egg savoir.
How to Make Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs
I have tried boiling hard boiled eggs on the stovetop, making hard boiled eggs in the oven and the microwave and even have resorted to making a batch of hard boiled eggs in the slow cooker! But not one method proved to yield perfect, easy to peel hard boiled eggs every single time.
Making Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs is the answer to all my problems and the reason my Instant Pot didn’t end up in the garbage! And these Pressure cooker Hard Boiled Eggs are so easy to make.
A ton of people talk about the Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs 5-5-5 method and this is very similar except I don’t really count the warming up period and I always use manual release because I’m impatient. And I may not leave the hard boiled eggs in an ice bath for 5 minutes if I’m just cooking them for my weekly meal prep.
How to make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot
- Place the eggs on the rack inside the Instant Pot (This is the Instant Pot I own and LOVE.) and add one cup of water (water is always needed to help the Instant Pot create pressure).
- Seal the Instant Pot and set to high pressure.
- Set cook time for 5 minutes and press start.
- Once the eggs have cooked for 5 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 5 minutes. Then, manually release any remaining pressure.
- Place the eggs in an ice bath to cool and then transfer to a container to store in the refrigerator.
- Or use in your favorite recipe using Hard Boiled Eggs.
So, easy to make and knowing your hard boiled eggs are going to peel perfectly is so much less stressful….especially for Easter egg hunts! And another great thing that I love about the Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs is you can make just one egg or a DOZEN eggs in the same amount of time.
How to make Soft Boiled Eggs
If you want to make Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs, it’s equally simple to do.
- Place eggs on the rack inside the Instant Pot and add one cup of water.
- Seal the Instant Pot and set to high pressure.
- Set the cook time for 3 minutes and press start.
- Once the eggs have cooked for 3 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 3 minutes. Then, manually release any remaining pressure.
- Place the eggs in an ice bath to cool and then transfer to a container to store in the refrigerator.
I love soft boiled eggs and like to snip off the top with scissors and dip toast points into for a super fancy sounding breakfast that’s totally not fancy at all.
How to Peel Hard Boiled Eggs
Now that you have made the perfect Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs, peeling them is fairly easy but there is a technique I use to get them to peel off in almost one smooth motion.
- Start by lightly tapping the ends of the egg on a hard surface or countertop to crack the shell.
- Lay the egg on it’s side. Lightly roll it back and forth applying just the slightest amount of pressure to crack the shell all the way around.
- Find the end with the air pocket and peel away the shell and membrane to expose the egg white. Then, peel the shell and membrane off the egg carefully.
How to Store Hard Boiled Eggs
Instant Pot or Pressure Cooker Hard Boiled Eggs are best stored peeled in an airtight container for up to 7 days. You can definitely store them unpeeled but they may hold onto some moisture inside the shell causing them to lose a bit of flavor the longer they sit.
- Hard Boiled eggs will last in the refrigerator up to 7 days.
- Hard Boiled Eggs can stand at room temperature, safely, for up to 2 hours.
- I do not recommend freezing hard boiled eggs because the egg whites do not thaw well.

Kellie, this is the only method I use. Today, I made a mistake and after five minutes, pushed the instant release, plunged them in ice water then realized my mistake five minutes later. I had the best, still warm, semi-soft-boiled eggs ever. Just FYI.
Did eggs using this method again but with 18 eggs.
The number doesn’t matter because the heat and pressure is equal throughout the chamber.
Cook 5, wait 5, release, chill and peel. It doesn’t get any simpler than this.
They came out perfect and peeled easily. It’s fun making hard boiled eggs again!
Kellie, thanks soooooooo much for this post.
I have to admit, I tried this expecting the usual outcome. Well, to my pleasant surprise, they came out perfect and so easy to peel… Thank you!!! Excellent!
This is how I’m making hard-boiled eggs from now on. I have NEVER had a dozen eggs come out so easy to peel in like forever,
However, I need to adjust the cook time because the telltale green yolks indicate overcooking and subsequent sulfur formation – not a flavor degrading thing.
Next time, I’ll cook for five then quick release vice natural release for 5.
Thanks so much for your comment! This is the only way to save yourself from frustration, IMO!!!
Do the number of eggs matter? Are they room temperature or right out of the fridge? Thanks!
