Homemade Old Bay Seasoning

Don’t be crabby – enjoy some homemade Old Bay seasoning! (See what I did there?) Sorry, was that too corny? Because this seasoning is delicious on corn, too! Okay, I’ll stop with the puns, but I won’t stop talking about how incredible this homemade seasoning is. I’ve been a BIG fan of Old Bay my entire life, pretty much from the first time I could crack into a crab leg! However, dare I say, this homemade recipe is even better than a classic container of Old Bay.

This recipe calls for 12 ingredients. While that may seem a bit extensive, every single one of those spices and powder is necessary for creating the most authentic Old Bay copycat seasoning. They all blend together perfectly to create a mixture that’s truly, almost unbelievably, mouthwatering. Not to mention, you most likely already have most of if not all of those 12 ingredients in your spice cabinet. And if you don’t, they’re all good spices that you’ll find yourself reaching for at one point or another!

Now that summer’s here, I find myself using this copycat Old Bay seasoning on a weekly, and sometimes daily basis. It’s the season of seafood, after all! And nothing quite beats the flavor of Old Bay when you’re making crab, shrimp, or any other kind of shellfish. It doesn’t just stop at seafood, either. Just the other day, I made a Bloody Mary with this seasoning, and it was the BEST bloody mary I’ve ever had! Whether you use it in a crab recipe, a cocktail recipe, or just sprinkle it over popcorn, you’re going to love this homemade Old Bay seasoning recipe.

How to Make It

The best part of any homemade seasoning recipe is how delicious it tastes. The second best part is how easy it is to make!

Whisk. Whisk all of the measured ingredients in a bowl to thoroughly combine.

Store. Transfer to an airtight container and store at room temperature for up to 3 months. Try to keep the container in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight.

What recipes can I use homemade Old Bay seasoning in?

In the morning, sometimes I like to sprinkle a little bit of this seasoning into my eggs! It’s also delicious on a piece of grilled chicken. There’s no limit to what you can do with homemade Old Bay seasoning! However, if you’re looking for some really good recipes, I’ve got you covered. Here are just a few of my favorite recipes that either already call for this popular seafood seasoning or would be even more delicious if added –

Can I alter the flavors of the seasoning?

Yes! That’s one of the many benefits of making your own seasonings at home. While this recipe is pretty close to the real deal, there are plenty of ways you can switch things up. If you’ve ever wanted your Old Bay to be tangier, add an additional pinch of dry mustard! Or if more smokiness is what you’re after, an extra dash of smoked paprika will do just the trick. When you make seasonings at home instead of buying them from the store, you can customize them any way you want!
