Best Chocolate Pizzelle

Store-bought pizzelles can’t hold a candle to this easy homemade recipe. Typically loaded with artificial flavors and preservatives, store-bought cookies just don’t make the cut in my kitchen. I like my cookies to be made with real ingredients and with love! With that being said, don’t worry – I also fancy myself easy cookie recipes that are hassle-free and easy to follow.

Delicate, beautifully imprinted pizzelle cookies are simply stunning and make for the best gifts! I usually whip up a batch during the holidays for gift giving and cookie exchanges, but they’re delicious treats year-round. Plus, because of their decorated appearance, they’re really very impressive! It’s our little secret, though, that they’re actually crazy easy to make. You just need a pizzelle iron!

I love Classic Pizzelle Cookies with my whole heart, but I might even like these chocolatey ones even more. What can I say, I’m kind of a chocolate addict! Made with just the right amount of unsweetened cocoa powder (any brand works), these homemade pizzelle cookies have real chocolate flavor! They’re a great cookie because they’re sweet, but not overly so.

The steps to making pizzelles are detailed in a series of four photos.

How to Make Them

Making these beautiful, impressive cookies is way easier than you may think. Plug in the pizzelle iron and let’s get to cooking!

Whisk the oil and sugar. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the canola oil and sugar.

Add eggs and vanilla. Add the eggs, one at a time, and stir until each is egg is incorporated before adding the next, then add the vanilla extract and stir. Set aside.

Sift and whisk. With a large sieve, sift the baking soda, cocoa powder, and flour together into a separate large bowl, then give the mixture a quick stir with a whisk.

Combine the wet and dry ingredients. Fold about a third of the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients with a wooden spoon or spatula, and then pour the rest of the dry ingredients in. Continue mixing until everything is just combined.

Cook the pizzelles. Heat the pizzelle iron. Drop 1 1/2 tablespoons of batter in the center of the pizzelle pattern. Close the iron, and cook for 40-45 seconds, until the hissing starts to stop. Open the iron, and transfer the pizzelle directly onto a cooling rack. Repeat until all of the batter has been cooked. Every pizzelle iron is different. Please check your user manual for accurate measurements and times.

Enjoy! Sift some powdered sugar over the cookies, if desired, and serve.

Pizzelle Baker

This is the Pizzelle iron I use by CucinaPro and we love it because it heats up sufficiently to make your cookies crisp.

What is a pizzelle?

Simply put – heaven! Pizzelles are traditional Italian cookies that are slightly sweet, thin, and crispy. These chocolate pizzelles are classic as can be, but with the addition of cocoa powder. In Italian, “pizzelle” actually translates to “pizza,” which is the Italian word for round/flat! Seeing as these light cookies are both round and fairly flat, I can see where the inspiration for the name came from.

How long will pizzelles stay fresh?

When stored properly, these homemade cookies will stay fresh for up to 5 days! Just make sure that they’re kept in an airtight container and out of direct sunlight at room temperature. There’s no need to keep them in the fridge.

Why aren’t my pizzelles cooked through?

Here’s the deal – all pizzelle irons are different. As you follow this easy recipe, you’ll also want to check out your user manual for more accurate measurements and timing instructions.
