Homemade Egg McMuffin
I love McDonald’s. I do. I know it’s bad but I love everything about it. Feel free to give me the lowdown on how bad their food is for me but I love the Quarter Pounder with Cheese…the Filet o’ Fish, the fries, the apple pies, the milkshakes, the fries, the Double Cheeseburgers, the fries. You get the picture. I, especially, love their breakfast sandwiches. All of them. Every.Single.One.
My favorite is the Egg McMuffin because it’s relatively healthy as far as fast food goes but you can make it even better at home! And it’s so easy to do.
What I love most about these Homemade Egg McMuffins is that they’re the best egg breakfast sandwich to make and freeze for busy mornings on the go. You can make a big batch of egg and cheese sandwiches just the way you like them…with bacon, without bacon or even with a sausage patty.
Freeze them in individual freezer bags and make the entire family happy every day of the week. Doesn’t that sound dreamy?
How To Make Homemade Egg McMuffins
These easy Freezer Breakfast Sandwiches are exactly what you get in an Egg McMuffin….perfectly round egg, cheddar cheese, Canadian bacon piled high on an English Muffin.
- Cook the eggs in a jumbo muffin tin or use a round ramekin if you have them.
- Spray the inside with cooking spray and give the eggs a little whisk to break up the yolk a bit.
- Allow the eggs to cool and remove them from the muffin tin or ramekin.
- Assemble the sandwich on an english muffin and wrap individually with plastic wrap.
- Place your individually wrapped sandwiches in a zip-top freezer bag and write the cooking instructions on the outside of the bag.
- Transfer to the freezer and wait for breakfast.

- Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds on a microwave safe plate.
- Flip the sandwich and heat for another 30 seconds or until warmed through.
- Eat immediately.
If you prefer to toast your breakfast sandwich, you can wrap in foil and heat in a toaster oven at 325˚ until warmed through.
These homemade Egg McMuffins are a lifesaver now, I pop one in the microwave while I’m getting my son ready for school and it’s ready when we leave. A great grab and go breakfast that’s healthy and satisfying.

i love the muffin tin idea! i usually use a few cookie cutters, sprayed on the inside. this is so much more practical!!
Great concept!
These look amazing!
Do you toast your English muffins before assembling the sandwiches?
I don’t but some readers have commented that they do and it works well for them.
I made these last night some with engliah muffin and some with biscuit and froze them. My husband got up this morning wrapped two of the biscuit ones in a paper towel and microwaved for a minute to start and the egg was still frozen and edges of cheese and stuff was burning. Put it in for 30 more seconds.. Still frozen egg.. Another 30 seconds and cheese was practically gone, ham had made buscuit soggy and egg was tough. Any suggestions? He thought maybe putting them in the fridge to thaw night before but I read in another comment not to do that.
They will get gummy if you thaw them overnight. Make sure your microwave is at full power when heating it and not at a lower temp.
Can you use sandwich bags, instead of plastic wrap?
I know it’s a silly question, I don’t have plastic wrap just sandwich bags.
The sandwich bags may melt in the microwave. I don’t know, I really haven’t tried it yet.
2nd time making them, loved them thbfirst go round! I added spinach and turkey sausage to mine
Such a great idea!
I made these on the weekend. Husband insisted to defrost them first. EPIC FAIL. He doesn’t think he can cook them from frozen. What’s the best way to reheat these? They are in individual freezer bags.
Hmmmm, yeah, I don’t think they would reheat well if you defrosted them first…especially if you cooked them according to the directions.
What is a jumbo muffin pan? Is it just a muffin pan that makes regular size muffins rather than mini muffins?
Hi Erica! Actually, it’s one size larger than the regular muffin tin….the pan will only have 6 wells and they’ll be the size of a muffin you would get in a bakery. They’re fairly easy to find.
Thanks!
I want to make these for a 4 day vacation. I want to skip the freezing part since its such a short trip, how long will they keep in the fridge?
I would only keep them in the fridge for about 24-48 hours. Otherwise, just freeze them and use when you’re ready. The cheese may get funky if you keep them in the refrigerator too long.
Hello,
Love this post. However, have you ever tried it with a bagel? Did it work?
I’ve never tried with a bagel but that’s a good idea. The bagel may get chewy in the microwave though.
My sandwiches always are soggy! I even wrapped it in new Saran Wrap leaving a side open to let steam out and I’ve tried wrapping it in a paper towel and they muffin is wet and soggy. Any tips?
I’m so sorry, Jennifer! I have found the paper towel method to work….if it doesn’t, I would try heating it in the paper towel for half the time and then flipping them over to continue cooking for the remaining time. I haven’t had issues when wrapping in a paper towel so I’m not able to duplicate the problem to trouble shoot. Let me know if that works. Otherwise, I would reheat on the paper towel without wrapping them at all.
Wax paper works really well too. That’s what I use. Great for rehearing and doesn’t stick.
Great tip!
My husband loves these, but I have tried it all ways advised from above and they are still soggy. So I started just freezing everything but the English muffin. Then just heat the egg, meat and cheese in the microwave and then toast the muffin or bread in the toaster.
That’s a great suggestion! Thank you for sharing and I’m sorry they did not meet your expectations.
HI – do you toast the English muffin before freezing it?
I don’t toast mine before freezing, they seem to toughen up when you heat them in the microwave if you toast them first.
How long can you freeze them for?
I’ve frozen them for up to 3 weeks without issues….beyond that they do tend to get a little weird.
Do you use press and seal or a basic saran wrap?
For this recipe, I used press and seal. If you use basic saran wrap, I’d double up with foil before freezing. And, of course, remove the foil before you microwave your sandwich.
