Puff Pastry Cheese Straws

I don’t think I’ve ever had puff pastry in any form and not liked it! With that being said, puff pastry seasoned and sprinkled with cheese then rolled into straws might just be my favorite iteration of the frozen dough. This appetizer is incredibly easy to toss together and always disappears first at parties, because who doesn’t love puff pastry and cheese?

When I’m hosting a party, I love a good appetizer recipe that I can toss together in a few easy steps. More often than not, I’m already rushing to get myself and my house guest-ready, so there’s no need to tack a stressful recipe onto my to do list. Puff pastry cheese straws are awesome because they take just a few minutes to prepare, toss into the oven and serve.

They’re also pretty versatile! While I really encourage you to try my combination of cheeses and seasonings, you can always get creative and use whatever sounds best or whatever you happen to have on hand. As previously mentioned, puff pastry is always pretty great however it’s served. This is a no fail recipe that’s easy to make and even easier to eat several of!

How to Make Puff Pastry Cheese Straws

Puff pastry straws are so easy to make in a matter of minutes! Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this page for more details on ingredients and step by step instructions.

  1. Prepare. Remember to let your puff pastry dough thaw in the fridge overnight so it’s ready to go when you are! When you’re ready to cook, preheat the oven to 375°F while you prepare the cheese straws.
  2. Season the dough. Roll each sheet of puff pastry out on a lightly floured board until it’s 10×12 inches. Beat the egg with 1 tbsp water to create egg wash and brush the surface of the dough with it. Sprinkle the dough with 1/4 cup parmesan, 1/2 cup gruyere, 1/2 tsp thyme, 1/2 tsp salt and some pepper to taste. Use a rolling pin to gently press all of the seasonings into the pastry.
  3. Form the straws. Cut each sheet crosswise with a floured knife or pizza cutter to form 11-12 strips. Twist each strip and lay them on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  4. Bake. Bake the straws for about 10-15 minutes. Flip each one over and continue baking for another 2 minutes.
  5. Enjoy! Let the straws cool off before serving.
  6. PRO TIP: Be careful not to bake the straws for too long or the cheese will burn!

Storage

Puff pastry straws are really best when they’re first baked. They’ll last the whole party though! Serve them at room temperature for a few hours. If you do happen to have any leftovers, keep them stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days. Note that they may not have the same consistency as they first did, but they’ll still be tasty.

Variations to Try

Here are just a few ways you can change up the flavors!

  • Pizza – Make pizza cheese straws by using shredded mozzarella cheese and serving the straws with marinara sauce to dip them in. Really seal the deal on that flavor with homemade pizza seasoning sprinkled all over the dough!
  • Everything – Everything but the bagel seasoning has taken the world (and my kitchen) by storm. Change up the flavor palate here by sprinkling these straws with some everything bagel seasoning.
  • Spicy – Add a little bit of spice with cayenne powder and/or crushed red pepper flakes.
