A witches brew cocktail is a colorful, festive cocktail perfect for Halloween. The color makes you think of a witch’s potion bubbling up in a cauldron, but the flavor is crisp and refreshing.

It’s the color that’s really the star of the show here. Empress gin is made with butterfly pea flowers, which means it’s purple out of the bottle and turns pink when combined with lemon. Blue Curaçao is also deeply colored—blue, as the name suggests—and has a sweet orange flavor. Combining the gin, Curaçao, and lemonade gives this cocktail an ombre effect.

Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll need for this recipe. For the full measurements, scroll down to the recipe card.

    • Empress 1908 Indigo Gin – As mentioned, this gin is infused with butterfly pea blossom, giving it a beautiful hue that changes color when mixed with lemon, making this cocktail extra magical. You can substitute another variety of gin, but you won’t get that color changing effect.
    • Lemonade – Store-bought or Homemade Lemonade.
    • Blue Curaçao – Blue Curaçao is a liqueur made from the dried peels of bitter oranges, giving it a sweet and slightly bitter citrus flavor that’s pretty unexpected given its deep blue color.
    • Sparkling Wine – No need for a pricy bottle, but don’t buy the cheapest either.

Tips and Variations for Witches Brew Cocktails

    • Make the eyeball garnish. I used canned lychees and stuffed them with cocktail cherries, then used a toothpick to secure them. You can also use peeled grapes, gummy eyeballs or other fun Halloween-themed candy.
    • Adjust the sweetness. This cocktail is on the sweeter side, but you can adjust the amount of lemonade to make it drier or sweeter.
    • Use flavored lemonade. Try this Homemade Strawberry Lemonade or Lavender Lemonade.
