Blackberry Margarita
This Blackberry Margarita recipe is the summery version of the classic margarita we all need in our lives. They’re refreshing, the perfect balance of sweet and tart, and of course, boozy. (We wouldn’t have them any other way, now would we?)
Blackberry Margaritas
Wine moms are SO last year. I’d much rather be a margarita mom—they have a little more sass (and they eat more tacos). This blackberry margarita recipe is my current favorite and I think it’s going to be yours too!
While margaritas are definitely a cocktail to enjoy year-round, I think they’re especially well-suited for summertime. They’re light, refreshing, and made for sipping on the patio (or poolside, if you’re lucky). So why not add some summer fruit to the mix?
I chose ripe, juicy blackberries because their pure sweetness seemed like the ideal balance to tart lime. The result is absolute perfection—this blackberry margarita is sweet enough to satisfy anyone who doesn’t like the lime-forward flavor of a traditional margarita, but it’s not icky-sweet like those neon-colored store-bought margarita mixes.
Add some tortilla chips and Homemade Salsa and you’ll feel like you’re at your favorite Mexican restaurant!
Ingredients for Blackberry Margaritas
In addition to the ingredients for the margaritas, you’ll need a cocktail shaker. If you don’t make cocktails often and don’t have a shaker at home, a jar with a lid or even a protein powder shaker will work.
- Lime – Friends don’t let friends use bottled lime juice to make margaritas. We’re using fresh here!
- Granulated Sugar – The berries are sweet enough, so we don’t need a lot.
- Blackberries – Look for berries that are plump and just on the verge of getting soft. These are the sweetest!
- Blanco Tequila – Here’s my cocktail philosophy: you should never buy the cheapest liquor, but you shouldn’t buy the most expensive either. A few steps above cheap is good. You’re adding other stuff to the mix, so you’re not going to taste all the nuances that make an expensive tequila expensive, but you WILL taste it if your tequila is just flat-out bad.
- Cointreau – I’ll also use Grand Mariner, but I don’t recommend triple sec.
- Ice – For serving.
How to Make a Blackberry Margarita
In the realm of mixology, margaritas are an easy place to start. Here’s what you’ll need to do.
- Shake it.
- Rim it. Combine the salt and [SPICE?] in a shallow dish. Rub a lime wedge along the rim of a glass, then dip the rim in the salt.
- Enjoy! Pour the blackberry margaritas over ice. Garnish with lime and additional berries.
Tips for the Best Blackberry Margarita
As I mentioned above, making blackberry margaritas isn’t hard, but it is all about the little details. Here are a few things to be mindful of when mixing these up!
- Taste the berries. This is important! If the berries aren’t quite ripe, you’re just going to be adding tartness on top of tartness and the balance of this cocktail will be off. You can remedy this by adding extra sugar or simple syrup, but you won’t know until you try the berries.
- Don’t skip the rim. The salted rim is another element that balances the flavor in a marg, and it also makes them feel fancy. In my humble opinion, a margarita without salt just kills the vibe.
- Pour over fresh ice. Strain the margaritas over fresh ice cubes for a margarita that looks like it came from a restaurant. (I’ll admit, when I’m making them for myself, I often just use the ice from the shaker, but for guests? Always fresh ice!)
