Honey Mustard

Creamy, smooth, and flavorful honey mustard sauce is so easy and fun to make at home! You’ll never go back to a store-bought bottle once you’ve mastered this quick and easy condiment recipe. Essentially, you just have to whisk everything together in a bowl until nice and smooth. Then you can enjoy as you see fit! Use it to dunk your nuggets in or dress up your baked chicken thighs.

Honestly, this sauce is so good you might just want to drink it with a straw. (Mostly joking). It’s got the best sweetness from the honey and plenty of spicy, tangy goodness from both the dijon and plain yellow mustard. But that’s not all that’s in the mix! A splash of apple cider vinegar enhances both the sweetness and tanginess while mayonnaise makes everything nice and creamy.

I also like to sprinkle in a small amount of salt and crack in some black pepper, but that’s entirely optional. Even if you skip those simple seasonings, you’ll still have a creamy condiment that’s ready to use! Also, making it couldn’t be any easier – you just have to mix it all together and either serve immediately or store for later. More info on storing honey mustard can be found below!

How to Make Honey Mustard

Got a whisk and a bowl? Great, that’s all you need to make this honey mustard recipe!

  1. Whisk. Add all of your measured ingredients to a mixing bowl. Use a whisk to stir everything together until combined.
  2. Taste. Conduct a little taste test. This is when you can decide to sprinkle in some salt and pepper if desired.

We love using it as a Honey Mustard Dressing for salads, too!

Storage

Homemade honey mustard will stay fresh if kept in an airtight container (like a mason jar) in the fridge for 1 week. Every time you use some, use a clean utensil! Any new bacteria that’s introduced to the honey mustard could make it spoil pretty quickly. Also, remember to keep it stored with a tight lid so a film doesn’t form over the top of it.

I do not recommend freezing honey mustard. It’s pretty creamy and does not thaw well.

How do you thicken honey mustard?

You can always whisk in more honey! Honey is the thickest ingredient in the mix, but it’s also the sweetest. Only add more honey for thickness if you don’t mind your honey mustard leaning more towards the sweet side. More mayonnaise will also work, but you’ll have a much creamier honey mustard with the more mayo you stir in.

PRO TIP: Use a good quality honey! An organic honey with a deep golden color and thick consistency is what will give your honey mustard the very best consistency and flavor.

Why do I need to use dijon and yellow mustard?

There’s such a great depth of flavor when both mustards are used! Plain yellow mustard creates that signature tangy flavor we’re looking for while dijon mustard adds a nice spicy kick that’s tamed by the other sweet and creamy ingredients. Be sure to measure both mustard ingredients with care so the dijon is the main ingredient and is enhanced by the smaller amount of yellow mustard.
