Easy, homemade Taco Seasoning Mix made from spices you already have in your pantry. Simple to whip up and better than those packet seasoning mixes that are loaded with sodium and preservatives. Make a big batch to have on hand for many Taco Tuesdays!
I’m not much of a taco fan…I think I had my share of bad tacos in my lifetime to convince me that I just didn’t like them. I’m more of a fajita girl but even then I don’t usually wrap things up in a tortilla. I usually just eat it…like stir-fry, but with a fork. It kind of is like a Mexican stir-fry so it’s not too weird. Right? Anyway…the rest of the family are die hard taco fans. My husband always talks about “when he was in high school…he LOVED taco day….and he would go have seconds and thirds and….” Same story every.time. So, I do my best to make tacos as much as my palate can take it.
I made them chicken tacos a few weeks ago and used a taco seasoning packet I picked up at the grocery store. And this is the exact moment when I realized why I don’t like tacos. The seasoning added an overly salty taste….like someone dumped a fistful of salt in the pan when I wasn’t looking. And don’t even get me started on the weird film that formed in my mouth which left a very unpleasant aftertaste. I’ll chalk that up to some preservatives that I couldn’t even pronounce. We suffered through it and ate every last bite. I vowed to make my own Taco Seasoning Mix and promised everyone that next taco night would be a better.
And I did….I whipped up my first batch of homemade Taco Seasoning Mix in about 1 minute flat. Without too much salt and not one smidge of preservatives. This is the real deal. I don’t use seasoning packets in my chili or my fajitas so why would I in my tacos. A few spices to add some heat, one to add a little smoke, a thickening agent that’s gluten-free and you’re good to go. Shake it all up in a jar and store in your pantry for true taco emergencies. And the best part is you probably have all or most of the ingredients already in your pantry. Now to create the most amazing taco ever. Game on!
