Why You’ll Love My Tequila Sunrise
Whether you’re an experienced home bartender or you’re just learning to mix cocktails, this recipe is one you’ll find yourself making all summer long.
- Only a few simple ingredients. Everything you need is easy to find and probably already on your shopping list.
- Ready in minutes. No cocktail shaker, muddler or special equipment required.
- Beautiful presentation. The signature layered colors make this drink look like it came straight from your favorite beachside bar.
- Perfectly balanced. Fresh orange juice keeps the cocktail bright while the grenadine adds just enough sweetness without overpowering the tequila.
- Perfect for entertaining. Make them one at a time for guests or line up several glasses and assemble them in just a few minutes.
- Easy to customize. Make it sweeter, stronger or even sparkling depending on your mood.
One of the things I love most about this cocktail is that it proves you don’t need complicated recipes to make something memorable. Sometimes the prettiest drinks are also the easiest.
Ingredients for a Tequila Sunrise
One of the reasons I love this Tequila Sunrise recipe is that it only takes a handful of ingredients to create something that looks and tastes like it came from your favorite cocktail bar. Every ingredient has a purpose, so choose the best quality you can for the freshest flavor.
- Silver Tequila – A smooth blanco or silver tequila lets the citrus shine without overpowering the drink. Choose one you’d actually enjoy sipping. Reposado tequila will add a warmer, slightly oaky flavor. For a lighter cocktail, try tequila blanco that’s lower proof.
- Orange Juice – Freshly squeezed orange juice makes all the difference. It’s naturally sweeter, brighter and gives the cocktail a clean citrus flavor that bottled juice just can’t match. If bottled juice is all you have, choose one that’s 100% orange juice without added sugar. Blood orange juice also makes a fun twist when it’s in season.
- Grenadine – This sweet pomegranate syrup creates the signature sunrise effect while adding just enough sweetness to balance the tequila and citrus. Homemade grenadine has a richer fruit flavor, but a good-quality bottled version works beautifully. Avoid artificially flavored syrups if possible.
- Ice – Plenty of ice keeps the cocktail crisp and helps maintain those gorgeous layers.
- Orange Slice and Maraschino Cherry – The classic garnish adds a bright pop of color and makes every glass feel a little festive.
Best Tequila for a Tequila Sunrise
The best tequila for a Tequila Sunrise is a silver (also called blanco) tequila. Its clean, crisp flavor lets the orange juice do the work while keeping the cocktail light and refreshing.
Some of my favorite options include:
- Espolòn Blanco
- Olmeca Altos Plata
- Patrón Silver
- Casamigos Blanco
- El Jimador Silver
Save your expensive añejo tequila for sipping, this cocktail is best with a smooth blanco.

How to Make a Tequila Sunrise
This cocktail couldn’t be easier to make. The secret isn’t complicated techniques—it’s simply pouring the grenadine slowly so it naturally settles to the bottom of the glass.
- Fill your glass with ice. A tall glass packed with fresh ice keeps the drink cold and helps create distinct layers.
- Pour in the tequila and orange juice. Stir them together gently until the mixture is bright, chilled and evenly combined.
- Add the grenadine. Slowly pour it down the inside of the glass. As it sinks, you’ll see ribbons of deep red settle beneath the orange juice, creating that iconic sunrise effect.
- Leave it alone. Resist the urge to stir. The beautiful layers are what make a classic Tequila Sunrise so recognizable.
- Garnish and enjoy. Finish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry, then serve immediately while it’s perfectly chilled.

How to Store a Tequila Sunrise
A Tequila Sunrise is best enjoyed right after it’s made. The layered effect will gradually blend together as the drink sits, and the ice will begin to dilute the flavors.
If you’re entertaining, you can save yourself a little time by mixing the tequila and orange juice ahead of time and refrigerating it until you’re ready to serve. When your guests arrive, simply pour the mixture over fresh ice, add the grenadine and garnish each glass.
Kellie’s Tips for the Best Tequila Sunrise
- Use fresh orange juice whenever possible. The flavor is brighter, less sweet and really lets the tequila shine.
- Don’t rush the grenadine. Pour it slowly down the inside of the glass so it naturally sinks to the bottom.
- Fill the glass completely with ice. More ice actually helps keep the drink colder without watering it down too quickly.
- Choose a tequila you enjoy drinking. Since there are only a few ingredients, the quality of your tequila really comes through.
- Skip the stirring until you’re ready to drink. Those gorgeous layers are half the fun.
- Want a slightly lighter cocktail? Top it with a splash of sparkling water or club soda for a little fizz.

What to Serve with a Tequila Sunrise

- Shrimp Tacos
- Carne Asada
- Chicken Fajitas
