Three ingredients Ranch Oyster Crackers are the best party starter for every occasion. Dry ranch seasoning, butter and oyster crackers are tossed to combine then baked for the most addicting and satisfying snack.

Toss oyster crackers with ranch seasoning and butter or oil, then bake 15-20 minutes at 250°F until dry and lightly golden. Butter provides richer flavor; oil makes for extra crunch. They’ll stay crisp up to a week in an airtight container.

Why You’ll Love My Seasoned Oyster Crackers

  • Crowd-pleaser: Kid-approved, game-day approved, “bring the recipe” approved.
  • Crunch your way: Butter for cozy, rich flavor or oil for that extra-crispy crunch, both versions are delish.
  • Zero fuss, big payoff: Toss, bake 15-20 minutes at 250°F, and try not to eat them all warm off the sheet.
  • Snack, soup topper, party hero: They dress up tomato soup, chili, salads…or just disappear by the handful.
  • Customizable: Keep it classic ranch or riff with dill, lemon pepper, a pinch of cayenne – your bowl, your rules.
  • Make-ahead friendly: Cool completely and they stay crunchy up to 7 days in an airtight container.

Oyster crackers may seem so insignificant and simple. They’re a little on the dry side by themselves making them perfect for tossing into soups or serving alongside a salad. They don’t seem like something you’d toss willy nilly into your mouth as an enjoyable snack…until now.

I’ve been seeing seasoned oyster crackers popping up in the stores now and boy, am I hooked. But there are only like two flavors that I’ve seen and really…I need more choices than that. So, here is the first of many more seasoned cracker recipes…..the OG Ranch Oyster Crackers.

They’re quick, they’re simple and they’re so totally amazingly addictive. Every ranch lover I know just can’t get enough of them and they’re fantastic for parties. What’s best is you can make these easy Ranch Crackers in advance and store in a airtight container for days!

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Oyster crackers – Those little pillow crackers are perfect for grabbing the seasoning. Different brands are slightly different sizes – any will work.
  • Ranch dressing mix – Roughly one 1-oz packet (2 Tablespoons). Start here, then adjust to taste. If you know you love bold ranch, add 1-2 Tbsp more.
  • Butter or neutral oil
    • 1 cup melted butter – rich, classic, buttery flavor.
    • ½ cup neutral oil (canola, vegetable, avocado) – the crispest texture.
Tip: Whisk the ranch mix into the warm butter or oil first so it clings evenly, no dusty patches.
  • Optional flavor boosters (pick a couple!)
    • Dried dill: leans into that “buttermilk ranch” vibe.
    • Garlic powder: savory depth – start with ¼-½ teaspoon.
    • Lemon pepper: bright, zesty finish.
    • Cayenne: just a pinch for a gentle kick of heat.
  • Salt to taste (optional)
Ranch mixes vary in saltiness and butter can be salted or unsalted. Taste a cooled cracker before adding extra salt.
  • Equipment – A large mixing bowl and 1 rimmed baking sheet (line it for easier cleanup).

How To Make Ranch Oyster Crackers

This simple snack takes minutes to prep and uses only three ingredients.

  1. Preheat to 250°F and line a baking sheet.
  2. Whisk and toss: Whisk the ranch mix into warm melted butter or oil so there are no dry bits, then toss with crackers until every little pillow is coated.
  3. Bake 15-20 minutes, stirring once halfway. They will be dry to the touch and lightly golden; no wet seasoning. If they still look moist, give them 3-5 more minutes.
  4. Cool completely on the sheet so the crunch sets (steam is the enemy of crisp!).

Your Ranch Seasoned Oyster Crackers will last in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days.

Kellie’s Tips for the best oyster crackers

  • Even coating hack: Toss in two quick rounds and scrape the bowl so nothing settles.
  • Seasoning clumps? Whisk mix into the fat first, then toss with crackers.
  • Not crunchy? Pop back in at 250°F for 3-5 minutes, then cool fully.
  • Too salty? Use unsalted butter and ease up on the ranch mix by a teaspoon or two.
  • Crackers – Be sure to use the best oyster crackers you can find. I like to use Nabisco or OTC oyster crackers but you’ll also want to make sure they’re fresh and not stale. Nobody likes a soft cracker.
  • Butter – I use salted butter for this seasoned oyster cracker recipe. You can use unsalted butter but then you may want to add a pinch of salt to balance the flavors just a bit.
  • Ranch Seasoning Mix – Any brand of ranch seasoning mix will work well for this recipe but I like to take it one step further and use my HOMEMADE Ranch Seasoning Mix. It’s super simple and ready in seconds.

What are Oyster Crackers

Also known as water crackers, oyster crackers are most often served alongside a plate of oysters or with oyster stew. They’re lightly salted and smallish in size. You can find them in just about any well stocked grocery store.

Tossed with a little melted butter and some dry ranch seasoning mix, you can turn your ho hum oyster crackers into a ranch fans favorite snack!

Flavor Variations

For a fun and spicy variation, add 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper to the ranch seasoning mix before tossing with the oyster crackers.

Replace the ranch seasoning with one of these homemade flavor boosters:

Serve alongside tomato soup, a cozy chili, or your favorite creamy dip.l

Leftover Storage & Make-Ahead

Once they’re totally cool, stash in an airtight container and they’ll stay crunchy for up to 7 days. If they soften, a quick 3-4 minutes at 250°F perks them right back up.

Can I use oil instead of butter?

Absolutely. Oil makes them crisper; butter makes them richer. Try ½ cup neutral oil or 1 cup melted butter – both are great.

How much ranch is in a packet?

Roughly 2 Tbsp (1 oz). Your ¼ cup is about one packet plus a sprinkle more – adjust to taste.

    Is there a no-bake version?

Yep! Toss, spread out, and air-dry 3-4 hours, giving them a stir every 30-45 minutes until they’re dry and crisp.

I was actually thinking of adding more butter. It was delicious but just a little dry. I think more butter would help that.

      1. Kellie says:

You can never go wrong with a little extra butter!

      2. Lori says:

I made these. They were perfect. I only made half the amount so I used a half a cup of butter. Perfect amount. Almost didn’t try it after reading comments, till realizing nobody read the directions

        1. Kellie says:

Yes, unfortunately a lot of people comment without realizing it could have been user error. I’m happy you liked them!

    2. Drea says:

      Delish!
After reading comments, I used 3 bags of crackers to 1c butter and ranch seasoning and it was perfect! I’m making these for Christmas gifts/goodies for work as an alternative to sweets.

      1. Kellie says:

I would like to be on your Christmas list. :-). I’m so happy you liked them! They’re our favorite with tomato soup.

    3. Katie says:

Way too much butter! I ended up throwing the crackers away. I should have trusted my instincts when I first saw that the recipe called for a cup of butter for 9 oz of crackers. After looking at other recipes, I think 1/4 cup would have worked better.

      1. Kellie says:

It’s 2 bags of crackers not one bag. 18 ounces total.

    4. Shell says:

I made these and they ARE delicious, but I think 1 cup of butter was too much. I may cut down on the butter next time I make them.

      1. Kellie says:

Thank you for your comment! You’re the second or third person who has mentioned it’s too much butter so I may need to retest this for research purposes….not because I want to eat the whole batch myself.

    5. Carol says:

Love them. Will be making them again and more often.
I have them as a snack

      1. Kellie says:

Thank you! I’m so happy you enjoyed them!

    6. Dorene Juengling says:

I found 1 Cup butter to 9 oz crackers was too much. Added another 9 oz of crackers.

      1. Kellie says:

The butter will definitely soak into the crackers and then make them even tastier but you can pull back on the butter if you’re concerned.

    7. Dee says:

I used 1 stick of butter per 9oz crackers. They turned out great. I also made a batch with a dry green goddess dressing base. So yummy

      1. Kellie says:

So glad you liked it! The Green Goddess sounds so good!

    8. Ashlyn says:

Is this supposed to be 1 cup of butter for a 9 oz bag of oyster crackers like it says? I melted 2 sticks (1 cup) and it was way too much butter.. so I added another bag to it and then it was good.

      1. Brenda Sue Westover says:

I’m going to make a bath of oyster Crackers with ranch, then I’m making a batch of Goldfish with taco seasoning, and I’ll either mix the two together or keep them separate.

        1. Kellie says:

          Good idea!

    9. Jennifer says:

I added 1 tsp. dill, 1 tsp. garlic salt and 1/4 tsp. Cayenne. I found it easier to put in ziploc bag and shake it up. Took 15 min., Turned out great! Can’t wait to top my tomato basil soup with these!

      1. Kellie says:

So glad you loved it! Thanks for your tip!

    10. Shari says:

I used 2 bags . I stick of salted butter , melted. Mixed that up . Add the whole envelope of Hidden Valley Ranch mix. Was considering cutting that back and add garlic salt next time. Easy and always a winner !
